Lake Joaquina Rita Bier

Take a deep breath, more than once, and contemplate nature in front of you. You are at Lake Joaquina Rita Bier. And while you're looking for a good place to sit and relax, I'll tell you the story of this place:

Joaquina Rita Bier was a visionary baroness. In 1872, she encouraged her husband Henrique Pedro Bier to buy land in Alto da Serra. She saw potential and beauty in those lands.

A generation grew up until the region developed. In the 1930s, the train had already arrived and there were more and more vacationers in Gramado. The Vila Planalto subdivision had been launched.

The lake is artificial, measuring 17,000 m2, the size of almost three football fields. Looking at the calm, the Araucaria trees over 70 years old and listening to the birds singing, it's hard to imagine the odyssey of making this lake appear from scratch.

It was built with shovels and picks, at arm and will. In 1937, the winter was also harsh, it was very cold and raining, but the works continued. Even a dike (dam) was built to contain the invasion of water that came from outside, because the region was very swampy.

Leopoldo Rosenfeld was chosen by the families and owners of the lots to coordinate the work of the subdivision, inaugurated in 1938 with a large barbecue, beer and wine at will, in an event under the huge pine trees that still surround the lake.

Enjoy the view, because many have worked for years so now you can relax, enjoy and toast!

In the surrounding area, another story was unfolding. There was a place called Vila Africana, where displaced families found temporary refuge. In houses made of tree fern, built with simplicity and courage, they endured time and uncertainty. Today, what remains is the memory of this living space, which also forms part of the memories around the lake (Cavalcante e Müller, 2020).
